Unexpected Organist

I recently learned about someone with an unexpected talent. An excerpt from the 1961 yearbook for the Oratory Preparatory School, an all-boys catholic prep school in New Jersey, reads as follows:

One of the most popular boys in his four years at Oratory has been Daniel De Vito from Asbury Park, N.J. Danny is a talented musician and Oratory is indebted to him for his splendid work as organist.  In dramatics "Danny" was excellent, and his leading role as St. Francis Assisi in the "Billion Dollar Saint" will be remembered by those at the performance.  But, most of all, "Danny" was a happy, smiling youngster, --"one of the boys."  We all wish you, Danny, the very best in all endeavors.

Perhaps your next ward organist may be someone unexpected. The Lake Crescent Ward recently organized a rotation of organists for sacrament meeting that includes two young men: Joseph Thompson (age 12) and Jack Lambourne (age 12).  Neither of these boys had been trained to play the organ, but both have played the piano for several years and were eager to try the organ. I spent a little time with each of them to orient them to the instrument and they have both done wonderfully!

As you prayerfully consider how to organize music in your own ward, be sure to include youth and others who may be able to serve in unexpected ways.
