For several years at the beginning of the Christmas season, our stake organized a Festival of the Nativity. These were wonderful events where stake members and others in the community were invited to display nativity sets from around the world at the stake center. In addition, individuals and small groups were invited to present sacred Christmas music for those who came to view the nativity displays. I was invited to share my talents on the piano, which created a meaningful missionary opportunity for me.
Many of my co-workers know that I play the piano and often express interest in hearing me play. The Festival of the Nativity was a natural and comfortable way for me to invite these co-workers to a church activity. My wife would typically accompany these co-workers as they viewed the exhibits and listened to me play. This opened the door for these friends to ask questions about the church and for my wife and me to share our beliefs.
I remember one friend in particular, a rough-around-the-edges biker, who afterward expressed his appreciation for being invited and mentioned that this was the perfect way for him to feel the Christmas spirit.
As in this example, sacred music has a unique power to open spiritual doors and create meaningful moments for members to share the gospel. As ward music chairman, consider organizing a musical fireside or other event to which members of your ward can invite their friends and co-workers. You could even consider joining with other wards in your building for a larger event, if appropriate.
