A Variety of Musical Numbers

"In addition to the ward choir, Relief Society, priesthood, youth, children, and family choirs may be invited to sing hymns and other appropriate musical selections in Church meetings" (Handbook 2: Administering the Church 14.4.5).

Growing up in the American Fork 12th Ward was a special experience.  I don't know that the ward had any more musical talent than other wards, but our ward music chairman took to heart the idea of introducing a wide variety of musical numbers in our sacrament meetings.

On one occasion, my family was invited to sing "Teach Me to Walk in the Light" in sacrament meeting.  I remember feeling a bit nervous standing with my brother and sister to sing the first verse, but we had practiced at home and were prepared. And now the memory of that experience is a blessing to me--a reminder of the love and happiness I felt in my family.  Truly, as the words of the third verse proclaim, "Grateful, we praise thee with songs of delight!"

We can make music a delight in each of our wards.  Consider the wide variety of ways members can participate beyond ward choir.  Perhaps it's a small group of young women or the elders quorum or a young family like mine.  Like my family, they don't have to be trained singers, but simply willing to share their testimonies.  Be bold as ward music chairman in inviting members of your ward to participate.  As it was for me, it will be a blessing to them and to your ward.
